Highbreed Seeds Germination Guide

Germination is the first and one of the most important steps in growing cannabis. Following the process correctly ensures strong, healthy plants from day one. At Highbreed Seeds we want your seeds to get the best possible start.

🌱 What is germination?

Germination is the process by which the seed activates and begins to develop: the embryo absorbs water, swells and breaks through the outer seed coat, producing the first root (the radicle). It is the starting point of every grow.

✅ Ideal conditions to germinate

For your Highbreed Seeds seeds to germinate successfully, it is essential to control these factors:

  • Temperature: between 22 and 26 °C. Below 20 °C germination slows down or fails.
  • Moisture: the substrate or paper should be damp, but never waterlogged. Excess water is the number one cause of germination failure.
  • Darkness: seeds do not need light to germinate. Keep them in a dark or covered place until the radicle appears.
  • Oxygen: make sure the germination medium has some air circulation to prevent mould.
  • Seed quality: fresh, well-stored seeds germinate more vigorously and quickly.

🔧 Germination methods

1. Damp paper method (the most popular)

  1. Place 2-3 layers of kitchen paper or napkins in the bottom of a container or tub.
  2. Dampen them with water (without dripping).
  3. Place the seeds on top and cover them with another layer of damp paper.
  4. Close the container to keep the moisture in and place it somewhere warm and dark.
  5. Check daily. The radicle should appear within 24-72 hours. Do not use cotton wool, as it can make transplanting difficult.

2. Glass of water

  1. Fill a glass with room-temperature water (minimum 22 °C).
  2. Add the seeds and wait 24-48 hours.
  3. When the seed opens and the first 2-3 mm of root appear, transplant them into the substrate.

3. Directly in substrate

  1. Use a light, airy, sterile substrate.
  2. Make a hole 0.5 to 1 cm deep.
  3. Place the seed with the tip facing down and cover gently.
  4. Keep the substrate moist and the container in a warm place. The seedling will emerge in 3-7 days.

4. Jiffy / peat pellets

Jiffies are pressed peat discs that are ideal for germination. They are hydrated in water until they expand and provide a controlled environment for young roots. They are especially useful for minimising transplant stress.

⏱️ Estimated germination time

  • Optimal conditions: 24 to 72 hours.
  • Normal conditions: 3 to 5 days.
  • Old seeds or suboptimal conditions: up to 10 days.

If the seed has not germinated within 10 days, it probably will not.

🌿 Transplanting the seedling

Once the radicle is at least 2 cm long, it is time to transplant:

  • Handle the germinated seed with clean tweezers, never with your fingers.
  • Place it in the substrate with the root pointing downwards.
  • Cover it gently with soil, 0.5-1 cm deep.
  • Water gently. The seedling will appear in 2-3 days.
  • Important: if you are growing an autoflowering variety, transplant it straight into its final pot.

❌ Most common mistakes

  • Too much moisture: the seeds rot. The paper or substrate should be damp, not soaked.
  • Temperature too low: below 20 °C germination fails or takes much longer.
  • Handling the radicle with your fingers: always use tweezers so you don't damage it.
  • Planting too deep: no more than 1 cm deep.
  • Opening the container constantly: patience is key; check once a day.
  • Old or poorly stored seeds: always keep your seeds somewhere cool, dry and dark.

💡 Highbreed Seeds tips

  • Label each seed with the variety and start date to keep better track.
  • If you grow outdoors, germinate preferably in spring, when temperatures are stable.
  • For indoor growing you can germinate at any time of year, as long as you control the environment.
